What Genres I Will Research Further and My Final Genre

The Genres I'm going to research further are psychological thriller and the organised crime story genre: Mob Film, I'm researching these further as I find them interesting and possible genres for my Short film. 

Psychological Thriller- This sub-genre is usually associated with the Horror genre but is known to combine elements from other genres such as mystery and drama in addition to the typical thriller. There are many themes involved with a psychological thriller these include: 

Reality- the quality of being real, characters will try and determine what is and isn't real. 

Perception- within this theme characters will mis-perceive the world around them or perceptions are altered by outside factors. 

Mind- the mind is often used as a location of conflict where characters battle their own minds to reach a new level of understanding. 

Existence/Purpose- characters will try understand their purpose in life and will seek out the truth. 

Identity- characters are often confused about who they are or even doubt who they are and try to discover their true identity. 

Death- the characters either fear or have an obsession with death. 

Mob Film 

Within the Mob or Gangster Films they will particularly concentrate on organised crime involving the Mafia or a connected crime family. 
There will often be a considerate about of violence. 
There are several things to consider in a Gangster Movie these include: 
The Nature of the Protagonist: usually they will have ties with the mafia and run a not so legal business and undertake tasks to keep this business running. 

The Nature of the Antagonist: this will usually pose a threat to the protagonist of the piece as the antagonist will be someone who creates trouble for the business keep running. 

The Shape of Dramatic Action: The drama will shape within the events of the film and interactions with the characters

Catalytic Event: this can come in different forms such as a character being "whacked" or a job taking place that will potentially pose a real threat to the protagonist. 

Resolution: Again this can come in different forms as it leas to the resolution of the catalytic event. 

There are many interpretations of the Mob film but one I draw inspiration from is a TV series simply because of the outcomes and outline of the plot: The Sopranos.

The Sopranos redefines the Mob Film genre by parodying the main conventions but keeping it serious, it satires the situations and characters by keeping the conventions but spinning them around for a different interpretation. 
    







The genre I am going to chose for my Short film is the Mob film as I feel I can create a dramatic piece by using the family element but combine it with crime.
