Tim Burton's Vincent (1982)

Synopsis- "Vincent" is about a 7 year old boy named Vincent Malloy who pretends to be the actor Vincent Price (Who also narrates the film), does experiments on his dog, he is obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe tales and comes to the conclusion he is a tortured artist detached from the woman he loves.

Representations-

Vincent- is different to all other children as he spends his days re-enacting characters Vincent Price played especially ones adapted from Edgar Allen Poe stories. He positions him self in a perpetual fantasy as he re enacts these characters so much so it seems he has alienated himself from others. His daydreams are so bizarre that his parents can't even comprehend his imagination, his imagination soars to obsession as he leads himself to believe he is a tortured artist and his wife is buried alive, he then collapses in a disturbed state of mind of wild intoxication leaving the viewer to ask is Vincent dead or alive? In his representation it is shown things that normal children enjoy repulse Vincent things such as bright colours, playing in the sunshine and fresh air. He also has a lack of communication as though he can't physically talk to people and struggles day to day with others perception of "normal". Comparisons have been made to Vincent with Tim Burton himself as they share a resemblance and Burton based many of the imaginative qualities on his own childhood and Vincent Price was Burton's Idol.

Vincent's Mother- wants Vincent to behave like other children, to play outside, however Vincent is far different to the other children. She seems to be a caring Mother but is un-supportive of his imagination.

Locations- The locations are filmed using stop motion animation and shot entirely in black and white to create a mesmerizing effect to show the exploration of Vincent's mind and imaginative visions which is a persuasive world of a little boy who can create a magical fantasy world.

Sound- The flute music at the beginning is soft and soothing which portrays Vincent as being innocent. The narration is carried out in rhyme which relates back to book by Dr Seuss which Tim Burton has said he loved as a child.

The Title- The title is named after it's main character also as he pretends to be Vincent Price which makes it a homage to Vincent Price himself
