Research and Planning: What Is An OTS?

I need to include awareness of the conventions of an OTS into my blog - demonstrate that I understand what are the conventions and how they then apply to short films

I followed this link to complete the task relating to Se7en

http://asmediaproductionsschs2014.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/conventions-of-ots-se7en.html

for the second task complete the tasks but using only short films - deconstruct and analyse/compare the OTS to three different films.

Research & Planning: Deconstruction: Doodlebug by Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan's Doodlebug from Manuel Slva de Andrade on Vimeo.

Synopsis- In a run down apartment a ratty looking man is enthralled with catching a bug, he runs around his apartment in a panic and it is then shown the bug is a smaller version of himself making the same movements. He then squashes it to only be squashed by a larger version of himself.

Representations-
The man- shown wearing clothes that seem ratty and torn which signifies he could have been in this room for months on end, he becomes obsessed with tracking down the "bug" which borderlines on insanity. He also shuts himself off from any outside contact by placing the phone into a jug of water, also when reveled the "bug" is in fact a smaller version of himself he still continues with his course of action which symbolizes his insanity

Narrative- The narrative structure is simple and linear which runs in 3 minutes of length.

Sound- The non-diegetic sound of the music pulsating in the background signifies the man's insanity hitting it's peak. The sound of the shoe hitting into the floor is amplified also, another sound that is amplified is the ticking of the clock this could signify that time is running out for the man

Title- A definition of a doodlebug is a piece of artillery for the military, I feel this is the title as the insanity of the man has arisen from serving in the military and he cannot adapt to normal life again so engages into a war with himself. The opening titles are designed with the man's eyes as the "O's" to show paranoia.

Research & Planning: Deconstruction: Telling Lies by Simon Ellis

Telling Lies (Short Film) from Simon Ellis on Vimeo.

Synopsis: The morning after the night before, a rapid spiral of disastrous telephone calls chart the certain ruin of young Phil's day as he attempts to fib his way out of one scrape after another. Told entirely in animated captions.

Representations-

Phil- is represented as being a deceitful man who lies his ways out of each conversation, he also seems uncaring for relationships as it is revealed he cheats on his ex-girlfriend Sarah

Sarah- seems to be jealous of Phil for sleeping with Victoria but is not that upset as she sleeps with his friend Darren

Darren- is represented as being a bad friend who doesn't care for the consequences of sleeping with Phil's girlfriend, he comes across as brainless when confronted.

Victoria- is represented as not caring for Phil as she explains it was a "one night thing" and wants to continue with her normal life/

Phil's mum- seems to care for Phil as she phones him like this is a regular thing but comes across as inquisitive to the nature of his breakup and her tone suggests that Phil's behavior is a requiring subject.

Narrative- The narrative of the film is exploited through animated captions through the ability of the audience seeing what the characters are thinking, this gives the audience a chance to eavesdrop into the life of these characters not necessarily to their conversations but directly into their heads.

Sound- the only sound heard is the ringing telephone which signifies the building blocks of ruining Phil's day.

Title- The title refers to the behavior of the characters as they are deceitful with one another.

The children leave with their dad, who's affectionate with them. They walk down a railroad track where an unkempt woman waits with two children, about the same age as Lynne and Steven. The children go with them. They're all headed to a holiday party at a pub. Lynne notices that the girl acts all too familiar with her dad. What's going on? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122498/

Research & Planning: Deconstruction: Vincent by Tim Burton

Timothy Walter "TimBurton (born August 25, 1958) is an American film director, film producer, writer, poet, artist and animator. He is famous for his dark, gothic, macabre and quirky take on horror and fantasy style movies such as BeetlejuiceEdward ScissorhandsThe Nightmare Before ChristmasEd WoodSleepy HollowCorpse BrideSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet StreetDark Shadows and Frankenweenie, and for blockbusters such as Pee-wee's Big AdventureBatman, its first sequel Batman ReturnsPlanet of the ApesCharlie and the Chocolate Factory andAlice in Wonderlandhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Burton

Vincent (Walt Disney Prods - Tim Burton, 1982) from Rico Lins +Studio on Vimeo.

Tim Burton's Vincent (1982)

Synopsis- "Vincent" is about a 7 year old boy named Vincent Malloy who pretends to be the actor Vincent Price (Who also narrates the film), does experiments on his dog, he is obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe tales and comes to the conclusion he is a tortured artist detached from the woman he loves.

Representations-

Vincent- is different to all other children as he spends his days re-enacting characters Vincent Price played especially ones adapted from Edgar Allen Poe stories. He positions him self in a perpetual fantasy as he re enacts these characters so much so it seems he has alienated himself from others. His daydreams are so bizarre that his parents can't even comprehend his imagination, his imagination soars to obsession as he leads himself to believe he is a tortured artist and his wife is buried alive, he then collapses in a disturbed state of mind of wild intoxication leaving the viewer to ask is Vincent dead or alive? In his representation it is shown things that normal children enjoy repulse Vincent things such as bright colours, playing in the sunshine and fresh air. He also has a lack of communication as though he can't physically talk to people and struggles day to day with others perception of "normal". Comparisons have been made to Vincent with Tim Burton himself as they share a resemblance and Burton based many of the imaginative qualities on his own childhood and Vincent Price was Burton's Idol.

Vincent's Mother- wants Vincent to behave like other children, to play outside, however Vincent is far different to the other children. She seems to be a caring Mother but is un-supportive of his imagination.

Locations- The locations are filmed using stop motion animation and shot entirely in black and white to create a mesmerizing effect to show the exploration of Vincent's mind and imaginative visions which is a persuasive world of a little boy who can create a magical fantasy world.

Sound- The flute music at the beginning is soft and soothing which portrays Vincent as being innocent. The narration is carried out in rhyme which relates back to book by Dr Seuss which Tim Burton has said he loved as a child.

The Title- The title is named after it's main character also as he pretends to be Vincent Price which makes it a homage to Vincent Price himself

Research & Planning: Deconstruction: Freiheit by George Lucas

George Walton Lucas, Jr. (born May 14, 1944) is an American film producer, screenwriter, director, and entrepreneur. He founded Lucasfilm Limitedand led the company as chairman and chief executive before selling it to The Walt Disney Company on October 30, 2012. He is best known as the creator of the space opera franchise Star Wars and the archaeologist adventurer character Indiana Jones. Lucas is one of the American film industry's most financially successful filmmakers . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Lucas

George Lucas' Freiheit (1966)

Synopsis- The film follows a young protagonist who is trapped in a war torn Germany and then attempts to flee for his life by crossing the border only to meet death.

Representations-

The boy- The boy is seen running for his life through a wilderness this is because he is sick of his restrictive society and wants to be free, but as his society is so broken down he is chased and even gunned down. His clothing looks to be that of a school uniform in the second world war and tells the audience he is being educated but since he is fleeing this could show he is intelligent as the topics being taught do not appeal to him as he finds them outrageous. His uniform and structure make him appear to be between the age of 15-17 as it looks as he is nearing the end of his secondary school education. He seems courageous as he runs away from his society and doesn't look back although he pauses to think of his situation he would rather die free than being restricted.

Location- The location is a forest that edges on the border of the boy's country, I would say the country is Germany as the soldier who guns down the boy wears a similar uniform of that in the second world war. I feel the wilderness contrasts that of the story as it's shown to be a sight to behold but is restricted completely by the rules of the society.

Sound- The sounds used in the piece is all entirely ambient non-diegetic sound with the opening shots the amplified sounds of birds chirping can be heard this contrasts the freedom of the animals to that of the population that are restricted by the rules in society. Thumping drums can be heard when the boy is running this is to signify his heart beat as he knows he is so close to being free but is gunned down before he makes it. Played over the top of his death is a collection of spoken words about freedom this is to show the boy's final thoughts as he was running from communism and it has a lasting impact with the audience.

The Title- 'Freiheit' translated into English is the German word for freedom, this bares the theme of the film over all.

Research & Planning: Textual Analysis

Today we wached the following American short films:

  • DAYBREAK EXPRSS by D.A. Pennebaker (1953)
  • FREIHEIT by George Lucas (1966)
  • NECROLOGY (ROLL CALL OF THE DEAD) by Standish Lawder (1969)
  • VINCENT by Tim Burton (1982)
  • FEELINGS by Todd Solondz (1984)
  • GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE by Joe Nussbaum (1999)
I will need to add three posts and embed links to one of the three in each of of them - then in the post

1.add a synopsis of the film and the director

2.deconstruct the narrative / style and sound

3.make notes on the ideas it gives you

Use clear and suitable titles to your posts: begin with Research and planning : deconstruction - then film title/director

Be creative in presentation methods e.g. you could make one a powerpoint from slideshare, one a talking head and one a 'tradtitional' post

Short Film Analysis

'About a Girl' is a short film directed Brian Percival. It revolves around a young girl who aspires to be a singer who lives on a council estate. The film  concentrates on her narrative as she explains her life.

http://onlineshortfilms.net/watch/about-a-girl-video_433221e80.html

The genre type is a docu-drama as it is not about a real person but acts as a drama as the main character reveals to the audience. The storytelling code is the girl as the narrator. The representations are as following:

Dad- he is represented as being a "chav" as he is revealed as being unemployed and wears a full tracksuit and smokes. He also comes across as a dead beat Dad as he doesn't seem bothered with his children.

Mum- she is represented as being a stereotypical single mother as she looks as though as she is struggling raising the children on her own. She doesn't appear too intelligent as she confused dental floss for worms and comes across panicky.

The girl- she is represented also as a chav due to her speech in a heavy slang filled vocabulary. She also seems fragile due to the circumstances she is in, she wants to be a singer so this could show she has a softer side also. The character is aggressive and masculine "tomboy" but is confident and assertive as shown to the audience through interactions and has a more male attitude.

The likely audience for this piece is film fans particularly British educated classes. The locations used in the piece are: Council estate, house, city street, bus, cafe and a football pitch. The intertextual reference made in the piece is the Dad reading the newspaper as it refers to another media text.

'The Last on Earth' is directed by Carlo Ortu and is a post apocalyptic neo comedy about a man who believes he is the last surviving human and plans to kill himself.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00pf28k

The genre type is post apocalyptic, comedy-irony, Sci-fi. The story telling code is the man serving as the narrator by telling events and talking to the camera. The representations are as follows:

The man- is represented as being intelligent as he knows where to obtain the poison in which to kill himself, he is also well spoken. He looks to be in his early 30's and is educated to a degree. He isn't dramatic but is impatient as there has been a short time since he believes he is the last human and is quite unimaginative as he hasn't tried to find any other survivors. Since he has decided to kill himself so he doesn't have to age by himself shows he hasn't got alot of courage and has a negative mindset.

The pub- is represented as a stereotypical east end pub and is more suburban rather than urban.

The likely audience for this piece again would be film fans but more male orientated due to the ironic humor. The locations used in the piece are London, a street and a pub. The intertextual references made in the piece are the use of the Iphone as it relates back to technology, the brands of alcohol (this is seen more as product placement). The style of the piece has been shot in more television rather than a film.

Thinking About Short Films

What Genres I Will Research Further and My Final Genre

The Genres I'm going to research further are psychological thriller and the organised crime story genre: Mob Film, I'm researching these further as I find them interesting and possible genres for my Short film.

Psychological Thriller- This sub-genre is usually associated with the Horror genre but is known to combine elements from other genres such as mystery and drama in addition to the typical thriller. There are many themes involved with a psychological thriller these include:

Reality- the quality of being real, characters will try and determine what is and isn't real.

Perception- within this theme characters will mis-perceive the world around them or perceptions are altered by outside factors.

Mind- the mind is often used as a location of conflict where characters battle their own minds to reach a new level of understanding.

Existence/Purpose- characters will try understand their purpose in life and will seek out the truth.

Identity- characters are often confused about who they are or even doubt who they are and try to discover their true identity.

Death- the characters either fear or have an obsession with death.

Mob Film

Within the Mob or Gangster Films they will particularly concentrate on organised crime involving the Mafia or a connected crime family.

There will often be a considerate about of violence.
There are several things to consider in a Gangster Movie these include:
The Nature of the Protagonist: usually they will have ties with the mafia and run a not so legal business and undertake tasks to keep this business running.

The Nature of the Antagonist: this will usually pose a threat to the protagonist of the piece as the antagonist will be someone who creates trouble for the business keep running.

The Shape of Dramatic Action: The drama will shape within the events of the film and interactions with the characters

Catalytic Event: this can come in different forms such as a character being "whacked" or a job taking place that will potentially pose a real threat to the protagonist.

Resolution: Again this can come in different forms as it leas to the resolution of the catalytic event.

There are many interpretations of the Mob film but one I draw inspiration from is a TV series simply because of the outcomes and outline of the plot: The Sopranos.

The Sopranos redefines the Mob Film genre by parodying the main conventions but keeping it serious, it satires the situations and characters by keeping the conventions but spinning them around for a different interpretation.

The genre I am going to chose for my Short film is the Mob film as I feel I can create a dramatic piece by using the family element but combine it with crime.

Mind Map Evidence of Genre Research

Genre Research

Below I have made a PowerPoint presentation on two genres I have researched and am interested in for making my short film:
